Comparing Limits of Stud Poker Variants

All stud poker games are characterized by three distinct features. There are multiple betting rounds. It is non-positional, which means that the poker player who is supposed to bet first will not be the same one for all betting rounds. And the poker players are dealt with a combination of face-up and face-down cards that are dealt to each poker player. The face-down cards are called "hole cards".

Two of the most popular stud poker variants are the "Five-Card Stud" and the "Seven-Card Stud". The Five-Card Stud poker was believed to emerge during the American Civil War. While the Seven-Card Stud poker, at the turn of the century, is beginning to become more popular, not only in casinos and public poker rooms, but in private home games as well. From these two stud poker games, there are more stud poker variants, such as the Mississippi Stud, the Low Hole Card Wild, the Buffalo Stud, the Crocodile Stud, the Australian Stud, the Six-Card Stud, the Eight-or-Better High-Low Stud, the Mexican Stud, the Razz, and the London Lowball.

All these stud poker variants can be played with any betting structure. But some specific stud poker variants are better played with certain betting structures. Here is a comparison:

- Five-Card Stud Poker - by virtue of it having four or fewer betting rounds is better played with no-limit and pot-limit games

- Mississippi Stud Poker - similar to the Five-Card Stud, it can be played with any betting structure but poker players find it more worthwhile with no-limit or pot-limit games.

- Seven-Card Stud Poker - since it has more than four betting rounds, the betting structure that suits it are either fixed-limit or spread-limit. That is, the earlier rounds have lower limits and as the game progresses to later rounds, the limits are raised. In some Nevada casinos, there is a $5/$10 limits, in which the first two betting rounds allow $5 bets and the succeeding betting rounds allow bets of $10. A variation of this is the $5/$10/$20, in which the last round allow $20 bets. In many California casinos, lower limits are implemented in the first three rounds, and then later rounds are for the higher limits.

- Six-Card Stud Poker - a poker game which is a hybrid of the Seven-Card Stud and the Five-Card Stud and played best with either no-limit or pot-limit betting structure.

- Razz - this stud poker variant is also known as the London Lowball, and it is usually played either pot-limit or no-limit.

Despite the betting structure preferences of many poker players for each of the stud poker variants, all of these can be played with any betting structure. And in home games, the betting structures can also be modified to accommodate the wishes of the poker players.
