What is Poker?
Poker is one of the most famous gambling games ever that is played either for money or for chips. The game can be played in dozens of ways but what you can't discount that poker is a betting round where the players are open to fold or drop out of the game, call or stay in the game, or raise the bet made by his opponents. All bets are placed to build a pot. The goal for each poker player is to win the pot by the best hand or by bluffing the others to fold.
There are two basic forms of poker: Draw and stud poker. Both forms have a deck of 52 cards. Sometimes a joker is added. Two to ten persons can participate in one game, but it is said that five players are the best number.
In Poker, all suits are equal. Aces are the highest and twos (or deuces) are the lowest. Usually, twos are called "wild". With 52 cards there can be 2,598,960 possible poker hands. In either forms of poker, the player who holds the best combination of hands wins the game. The following are the principal combinations of the game: straight flush (this is with five cards, all with one suit that includes the ace, king, queen, jack and ten. This is also called as the royal flush, and this makes up the highest combination in the game); four of a kind (e.g. four kings); full house (three of a kind and a pair); flush (five of one suit); straight (a five-card sequence despite differences in suit); three of a kind; two pairs, and one pair. Below this, players can win the game with only the highest card.
Draw Poker
In draw poker, the five cards are dealt with one by one, face down and rotating to each player who has paid the ante to the pot before the play. Starting from the left side of the dealer, players wage their bets. At this point, it's either the players open the betting or defer to the next player by saying "check". Once a player bets the other must call the opening player's bet to stay in the game.
At the end of the first round of betting, a player can either stand pat (hold his cards) or draw from one to four cards from the stack (after discarding one to four cards in his hands). Then another interval of betting follows. If a bet is not met, the winner is not required to show his hand. Only when a bet is called, all players should show his hands and see who has the best hands.
Stud Poker
Also called open poker, each player is dealt individually with one card down (hole card) and another facing up. Each player looks at their hole and lets it remain face down. The players showing the highest card facing up starts the betting, and when the round of betting is over, another card is dealt face up. This goes on until four cards are showing and one face down. After the final betting is done, the hole cards are flipped open to reveal who has the best hand.
